Pleasanton’s History at a Glance
Prior to the city’s establishment in the 1850s, an earlier settlement known as Alisal occupied its location.
The city is named after Alfred Pleasonton, a major general who led volunteers in the Union cavalry during the Civil War. The current spelling of the city’s name was the result of a typographical error committed by a recording clerk in Washington, D.C.
